Drawing from my 19 years of experience as a bilingual Court Clerk & Registrar working daily inside the courtroom, I strive to equip you with the court terminologies knowledge and skills necessary to excel in a career inside the courthouse, earning you the respectful title of "Madam" or "Mister Clerk", should you choose to become a Court Clerk & Registrar.

My career journey within the Court Services Division includes extensive mentoring and training for newly hired Court Clerks & Registrars and CCRs, contributing to their successful integration into the Court Services. I was honored to receive a Recognition Letter for 15 years of dedicated public service.

Chapter 01: The Terminologies Used in Bail Court Proceedings

MODULE I

1. In the Synopsis - Reading the Facts of the Offense

Charge: Sexual Assault

Complainant: Apple Carrot

Date/time: Saturday, January 6, 2024, at approximately 3: 30 pm.

Location: 1004 Avocado Avenue in the City of Toronto (Toronto Orange Hotel)

Complainant: Pearl KIWI                              

BACKGROUND: The Toronto Orange Hotel is located at 1004 Avocado Avenue in the City of Toronto. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the hotel was transformed into a City of Toronto shelter. The property is equipped with CCTV and protected by uniformed security guards.

The complainant and accused both reside at 1004 Avocado Avenue, Orange Hotel, in the City of Toronto, but in different rooms on the third floor.

The complainant and accused are not involved in an intimate relationship.

SYNOPSIS: On Saturday, January 6, 2024, at approximately 30:30 PM, the complainant was on the third floor hallway. The complainant was upset over an unknown matter.

The accused got off the elevator and approached the complainant. He began to ask why she was upset. The accused asked the complainant if she wanted to go back to his room, but she declined.

The accused then grabbed the victim’s hand and took her into his bedroom, located in room 330. The victim laid on the accused’s bed. The accused then proceeded to kiss the complainant on her forehead. He then began touching the complainant’s chest, without her consent, but she had her arms crossed. The accused proceeded to kiss the cuts on the complainant’s arms.

The accused then left the room. The complainant managed to rain away. Shortly after, the victim notified her friend of the incident.

The victim then notified the staff of the Toronto Orange Hotel who then called the police.

ARREST DETAILS: On Tuesday January 9, 2024, the accused was located at 1004 Avocado Avenue in the City of Toronto. He was placed under arrest, read his rights to counsel, and held for a show cause hearing (bail hearing).


This is an example of the court case the Court Clerk & Registrar or Court Client Representative will be working on to produce court orders such as Bail or Release Order.

What can I expect to do in this role?

In a fast-paced team environment, you will perform a wide range of duties both in and out of the courtroom to support in-person and virtual hearings.
You will:
• Support the modernization of courts by participating in pilot projects and actively engaging in improvements to the delivery of court services• Carry file cases from intake, bail hearing, all court appearances, to final disposition• Prepare and review legal materials e.g., books of documents, court forms, previous decisions, submissions made by parties’ counsel• Preparing, signing and issuing court orders and default judgements• Prepare and maintain both physical courtrooms and virtual hearing rooms for proceedings e.g., ensure court decorum; set-up open/close court; facilitate communication between parties; speak publicly during court proceedings, support case flow; handle, mark and record all court-related documents; maintain logs and court exhibits• Attend to juries and witnesses e.g., coordinate and assist jury panels; attend to witness’ needs• Assist public, court personnel and justice participants by responding to questions and providing information on protocols and procedures• Complete and reconcile financial transactions• Operate specialized courtroom technology to support in-person, virtual and hybrid court proceedings, court audio and video recording equipment, electronic display evidence equipment, ensuring equipment is in working order at all times and is tested prior to court, during court and after each recess• Ensure all proceedings are recorded and annotated in accordance with legislative requirements, ministry guidelines and standards
